African American women are challenged daily by micro and macro aggressions, while navigating life transitions amid the tireless efforts of maintaining the Strong Black Woman stereotype. As a result of these experiences, African American women commonly experience loneliness, self-imposed judgment, and feeling of being misunderstood while also under chronic pressures to caretake others at the expense of self.
The Black Women’s Group at Skylight Counseling Center provides a safe and sacred space that invites Black women to come together to safely explore their experiences, thoughts, feelings, emotions in a relationally nurturing, supportive, and therapeutic environment. The group provides Black women between the ages of 28 and older, and from all backgrounds, the experience of transformational healing using a holistic approach to heal the mind, body and spirit.
Latryce Sharp is a Couple and Family Doctoral candidate and Master’s level Art therapist. Rolanda Brown is a Master’s level Couple and Family Therapist.
Together, Latryce and Rolanda combine their therapeutic skill sets and their passion for healing to embrace women of Color in their journey toward healing victoriously from imposed historical wounds of racism and oppression influencing the myth and pathology of the “Black Superwoman.”
